The greatest majority (2 million) are associated with health issues, as opposed to injuries. One of the Most Important inputs to any commercial activity is Human Power. Health and safety of people in working environment thus assume greatest importance in the Management of any business. There are numerous ILO conventions and standards (ILS) concerning OH&S that have been adopted by countries around the world, to varying degrees

OHSAS 18001 has been in vogue to cover this requirement of the systems governing and safeguarding the Occupational Health and Safety of workforce. With the advent of revisions in several standards and with an increased level of Hazards in industries due to use of several materials which are both safe and unsafe to humans, work on a new ISO 45001:2018  standard has been initiated.

ISO had prepared a draft for ISO 45001 in April 2017 which was rejected by participating countries as being inadequate. A final Draft is now ready and is circulated for Voting. It is expected to finalize soon, and the new standard is likely to be published in March 2018.

OHSAS 18001 is now to be replaced by a new standard ISO 45001:2018 as the International standard which outlays the system requirements for Occupational Health and safety necessary to be practiced in any business facility. The standard states the requirements to enable an organization to proactively improve its’ OH & S Management system. The standard also provides guidelines for use. The ISO 45001:2018 standard is not a prescriptive one for OH & S Management System for every facility regardless of its size and nature of the business but may be mandatory depending on the legal requirements imposed by the regulating authorities of the area in which the facility is operating.

This ISO 450001:2018 standard has been developed in line with the requirements of international standards such as ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 14001:2015 and is meant for requirements regarding health and well-being, prevention of injuries to its labor force, integrated into existing Management systems according to either of the above two standards.
