Global Food Safety Initiative

Global Food Safety Initiative was started in the Year 2000. To commemorate the completion of this 18 Years of service to society, Global Conference GFSI has been scheduled for March 5-8, 2018 in Tokyo Japan (http://www.mygfsi.com/events/global-food-safety-conference.html). GFSI is not a standard but it does setup Bench-mark levels which the companies have to reach for being qualified as entities handling safe food. In other words, it is only a guidance document to have good manufacturing practices. GFSI in its Global Conference of 2016 concluded that companies had to spend nearly 20 -30 billion US dollars to fight Food Safety Fraud. AN expenditure involving few Hundreds of USD can save your facilities big amounts in terms of Food safety and consequential expenditures. Prevention is always better than Cure.

 

To emphasize the importance and participation GFSI has constituted a forum where Public will be consulted before making changes to benchmark requirements. This is in line with FDA model of collecting public opinions.

How to Participate in the Public Consultation

To participate in this public consultation for the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements V7.2, simply follow the steps below:

  • Start by reading the Executive Summary of Changes.
  • For Parts 1, 2 or 4: please send any comments by email referencing the relevant clause or section name.
  • For Part 3 Key Elements, please insert your comments in the dedicated spreadsheet.

Please keep in mind that these documents are in draft format with the layout and design to be finalized upon completion.

  • Return all the above by email before 22nd January 2018.

How to be a GFSI Compliant Facility

GFSI recognizes the following 3 International Standards for Food Safety:

BRC:  British Retail Consortium

SQF: Safe Quality Food

FSSC 22000:2017 It is a combination of ISO 22000 + ISO/TS 22002-X where is x is the variable (1 through 6) applicable as per the nature of the activity in the facility. TS 220002 replaces all Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) towards Pre-Requisite Programs of any facility. Where ISO 22000 covers all the requirements of Food Safety Management System which includes Risk Management, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Hazard Analysis Risk based Control Points (HARRisk-based along Food Chain, Process Flow etc.

The above three are the certifiable standards recognized by GFSI and meets the bench mark requirements.
